Tornadoes or Funnel Clouds

Tornado Warning

By definition, a tornado warning is an alert by the National Weather Service confirming a tornado sighting and location. The Weather Service will announce the approximate time of detection and direction of movement. Winds will be 75 mph or greater.

Tornado Watch / Warning Announcement

An announcement will be made via the PA system that a tornado watch/warning is in effect for the immediate area. Further details will be announced as they become available. Should a shelter in place evacuation become necessary, details will follow the announcement of the tornado warning.

Severe Weather Evacuation (Shelter In Place) Instructions

  • Preplan your refuge -- this action is the key to your safety!
  • When a TORNADO WARNING is broadcast, go immediately to the nearest shelter in place location.
  • Evacuate upon hearing instructions by way of the Emergency Intercom System. Exit to your shelter in place area quickly and calmly. Help others if necessary. Take ONLY readily accessible personal items with you such as purses, wallets and keys.
  • If you are the last person to leave the office or suite, close all the doors leading into the main corridors.
  • Go to the designated gathering area. Stay with employees from your organization. Do not leave the area.
  • When in the shelter in place location, sit on the floor. If a tornado strikes, duck your head between your knees and cover the back of your head with your hands for protection.
  • Tenant representatives will then report anyone who is not accounted for to Security.
  • The Command Center will have a battery-powered radio and flashlights.
  • Do not re-enter the building until Security Personnel have notified you that it is safe to re-enter.
  • Once the ALL CLEAR is given, return to your work area with caution. Multiple tornadoes can occur in one storm.
