Tenant Handbook

Fire Emergencies

All personnel must exit suite and standby at the stairwells for further instructions when a Fire Alarm signal sounds. During an evacuation, the emergency floor evacuates first followed by the floor above the emergency floor and then the floor below the emergency floor. The Senior Transwestern Manager supervises the evacuation until the Fire Chief arrives.

Each tenant office manager or supervisor must predetermine priorities for the safety of records, classified material or securities. Supervisors must cooperate with Lead Floor Warden to ensure all employees are educated and instructed on proper evacuation procedures.\

Security contacts the Lead Floor Wardens directly above and below the fire floor and the Evacuation Team.

The Lead Floor Wardens contact the Floor Wardens assigned to their floor. In addition, they assume full control of their floor and activate the Emergency Preparedness and Evacuation Plan.

The Floor Wardens and Monitors for Persons with Disabilities go into immediate action. Absolute silence and decorum must prevail for maximum effectives.

The Lead Floor Warden, under instruction from the Evacuation Team, orders the fire floor to evacuate. As soon as the occupants of the fire floor have reached a safe level of descend in the stairwells, the Lead Floor Warden signals the adjacent floor immediately above and the floor below the fire floor to evacuate.

All elevators are called to the ground floor and put on manual control. To avoid lobby congestion, the Assistant Evacuation Director promptly clears the ground floor lobbies by directing all people outside.

As each floor is evacuated, the Floor Wardens make sure all Stairwells doors are closed after the last person exits the floor.

Unless a Stairwells is on fire or smoke-filled, the alternate Stairwells can be reached via crossover through the closest tenant floor.

The orderly phasing of floor clearance continues until all occupants are evacuated to outside muster areas (see Evacuation Muster Area plans below).

The alarm signal continues throughout the state of emergency.

When the “All Clear” is announced, the Evacuation Team signals the Floor Wardens to lead the employees in an orderly fashion back to their work places, if available, elevators will be back in service. The Evacuation team coordinates the loading of the elevator cars to prevent over-crowding. Single floor groups should enter an elevator together. Mixed floor groups entering the same elevator will slow down the return process.

The intermittent Alarm Signal is silenced when the “All Clear” is announced.

It is recommended that all tenants keep a hand held flashlight at your desk in the event electricity is lost. This will provide light to see your way to the stairwells.

NOTE: Upon arrival, the Fire Chief is in charge.
